Why everyone should support their local team

2023-11-09

In the modern world, we are accustomed to the idea of everything being highly globalised, especially in football. From the days when international transfers first began infiltrating the Premier League to the recent opening of a PSG shop on a bustling London High Street, football has unmistakably evolved into a global business. The desire to expand beyond its borders is evident, but one question lingers - will this relentless expansion ultimately destroy the beautiful game we've all come to love?

Sure, watching international superstars like Erling Haaland grace the pitch is an exhilarating experience and supporting the team that’s winning everything can only be seen as joyous. But have you ever indulged in fish and chips from the Gresty Road chippy just outside of Crewe Alexandra's ground before a match? Believe me when I say, it's an experience that transcends mere football fandom.

The feeling of arriving in a new city or town, going to the local pub for a few pints, grabbing a bite to eat, and then strolling briskly to the stadium to feel the magic of football - this is a sensation that no big-name international star can replicate.

As someone who grew up supporting Crewe, I've spent most of my life either at Gresty Road or visiting lower-league teams. Admittedly, the football on display might not be of the same standard as the Premier League, but that's perfectly okay. It's a different kind of excitement, one that is raw, authentic, and deeply rooted in the local community.

Within pubs, schools, and the local newspaper, the game is what everyone talks about throughout the week in the run-up to the next game. It showcases what a club means to a town, how it can become an integral part of the local identity, and the pride it brings to the community. Supporting your local team isn't just about the ninety minutes on the pitch; it's about becoming a part of something much larger.

In the modern world of football, it's easy to get swept up in the allure of international stars and big-name clubs. However, it's important to remember that the heart and soul of the sport reside in the local teams, the grassroots, and the communities they serve. So, whether you're a fan of Crewe Alexandra or any other local team, remember that the true magic of football lies right on your doorstep.
